Laguna Chicabal is a sacred Mayan lake, emerald green, surrounded by a cloud forest
where the quetzal lives. This lake is the former crater of a volcano.
Chicabal is a place of Maya worship. At weekends you often see groups of indigenous
people performing rituals. From the edge of the crater you can see Santa Maria and
Santiaguito volcanoes, and maybe you can even witness an eruption of Santiaguito.
This medium hike begins in San Martin Sacatepequez (also known as San Martin Chile
Verde), 45 min away from Xela. Here we start with a fairly extensive walk that takes
2 hours to complete. From the edge of the crater we descend a staircase with 570
steps down to the crater lake. Then we walk around the lake and through a different
route back to the crater rim. (So you don’t have to climb 570 steps back.)
