San Francisco el Alto

Visit the largest indigenous market in the region. This market including textiles and traditional crafts brings buyers and sellers from miles around. On the upper square is the largest animal market in the area.

Visit the San Francisco Market in half a day, the market is one of the largest in Guatemala. Of special interest is the animal-market located in The highest part of the pueblo. Market day is Friday.

Before we go the market, we´ll visit a weavers family near Momostenango. The give a very good demonstration of the way the make the famous woolen blankets and rugs from Momostenango.

We also visit the colorful church of San Andres Xecul, And the oldest church of Central-America in Salcaja, which is on the way back to Xela.

Momostenango

Visit one of the most traditional villages in Guatemala. Momostenango still uses the Mayan calendar, and it is also known worldwide for its wool products: jackets, bedcovers, blankets comforters, carpets, etc. The market days are Wednesday and Sunday. Sunday being the bigger market.

Before we go the market, we´ll visit a weavers family near Momostenango. The give a very good demonstration of the way the make the famous woolen blankets and rugs from Momostenango.

We will also visit the famous cliffs outside of town (Los Riscos) and see Mayan alters. Finally, we will also go to the attractions of San Andrés Xecul (Maximon, the painted church, and Mayan alters) and Salcajá (Church of San Jacinto). This is a trip for those who want to see today’s Mayan culture in Guatemala.
